Ode to the Bat

The bat lay before us, stunned
by a car, perhaps, he hit
mid flight
or did the car hit the bat, mid drive?
hard to know these matters
of responsibility

we had been talking
about consciousness, changing
western minds to return
to what was

when we lived with the land
not on it or by it but with it, in one
with all beings but

the bat
lay stunned, speaking a language
we strained to hear
but could not.
